PERMUTATION, 2024
3 x 36 in. (expanded)
Accordion flag-book, screenprint on Somerset paper and film, removable tape.

Frames from digitally-rendered animation are screenprinted on paper and film, and the film is hand-cut to become flags. They are adhered with resealable tape so they could be rearranged to theoretically create 78 or 42 factorial different compositions. The collapse or expansion of the accordion-book is akin to the ease we have in manipulating or mirroring an artboard, and the varied opacities in the flags are a visual cue to digital styles of layering.

By making tangible the tools of translation, reflection, and rotation that we’ve become so quickly accustomed to on editing platforms such as Photoshop, we can not only realize the expansive possibilities held within constraints, but also gain a deeper appreciation for the powers of step-by-step transformation.

Using node-based programming TouchDesigner, the Permutation series is installed as an activation point for an interactive installation. The viewer is prompted to hold and open the accordion book towards the webcam, in which the output is placed against the original video the screenprinted frames were taken from. After the book is stretched to about wingspan width, the viewer, with the book, is tiled back into the animation to add to the cyclical, generative system between digital and analog forms.
